We knew this day would come… Instagram to change it’s formula to BEST POST FIRST!

Bring on the petitions! I’ve seen 2 already online today. OK OK, so we knew this day would come. Instagram is switching its feed from chronological to best posts first. Facebook didn’t acquire Instagram for 1 billion for nothing.

What do you mean?!

Instagram will now be ordering posts “based on the likelihood you’ll be interested in the content, your relationship with the person posting and the timeliness of the post”. This is because the average person doesn’t see 70% of what’s in their feed because… they’ve followed so MANY PEOPLE.

Of course, a myriad of businesses rely on Instagram for sales which could limit their exposure to their Instagram followers. Similar to the way that businesses could have over 100,000 followers on Facebook with 3-4 likes per post only because -> ADVERTISING.

“The changes mean if you don’t check your feed until the next morning but a friend whose photos you usually Like posted something awesome the night before, it could appear at the top of your feed even if it is hours old. This is essentially how Facebook’s feed works, and how Twitter recently reconfigured its feed to work.” –  Tech Crunch.

This begs the question – how can businesses help their Instagram situation?! because being noticed on Instagram will now become more competitive than ever…

Have your followers “Turn On Post Notifications”

Put it out there to your followers that if they don’t want to miss any of your posts – to turn on their notifications. There’s no shame in doing so if you have legitimate and worthy content that they want to see. This will mean they will get a buzz on their phone every time you post, and Instagram will prioritise your post on their feed.

Interact with your followers – like/comment/reply

Instagram’s algorithm is going to be ordering posts according to what they think your followers will be interested in – so replying back and forth to comments will show that your followers will be more interested in the content and your relationship with the person posting.

Ensure your content is of quality

Create + post content that generates the most traction for you. Most businesses know what causes buzz on their own Instagram feeds so taking a little more care when posting quality content will keep you up there.

Don’t be afraid to budget for sponsored posts on Instagram

When Facebook first introduced sponsored posts, the businesses who weren’t happy paying for their posts to be seen swiftly fell behind. Many criticise that this favours big business however I’ve seen small businesses succeed and benefit far more through this system. Successful small businesses still use sponsored posts because they’ve taken the time to learn how to do it well, and with every $X they spend they make $XX. Don’t be afraid to experiment even if you have a small budget and create some social sharing!
